DIY Bird Feeder from Coffee Can

by Birdy

Just about everyone loves to watch birds, and those that are serious about bird watching, will usually have a bird feeder or two in their back yard. Bird feeders can be purchased in whole, or build from kits, but they are actually pretty easy to make by yourself with items that you probably have laying around your home right now.

Money doesn’t come around easy these days, and if you are someone that wants to attract some birds without blowing the budget, they can be easily made. Another great thing about making your own bird feeder is that you can make it interesting and different from all of the rest.

Take for instance, an empty coffee can, can make some of the best types of bird feeders. If you are trying to attract song birds such as a humming bird, you can paint the coffee can a bright color such as red or pink. Of course there are also lots of species of birds that do not really care what kind of color it is.

You will also need to have a plate for the seed to pour out on from your coffee can. But before you attach the can to the plate, you will need to drill some holes in the can. A couple on the bottom of the can for the seed to pour out and feed the birds, and also on top so that you can reload the can full of food when the supply gets low. When attaching the plate to the bottom of the can, you can use any type of weather resistant glue, or even nuts and bolts, whichever is easier for you.

When you have the bird feeder finished, you will have to find a place to mount it. You can secure a straigh piece of wood coming straight out from the tree, and then tie it with fishing line from the wood to the coffee can. This will give the bird a nice place to hang out and feed. Others may want to use a small chain and attaching it an S hook to the can.

Just remember no matter what kind of bird feeder it is that you have, make sure that you clean it out every couple of weeks. You want the seed to be fresh so that you can keep birds coming back for more, and you want the food in a clean environment so you don’t risk the food rotting and spreading disease. Building your own bird feeder can be fun and also attract the rarest of birds. Just use your imagination, and your goals can be limitless.
